The future will bring the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things or IoT is a popular trend in businesses and everyday life for many people. The IoT is a concept where everyday things such as refrigerators, microwaves, thermostats, etc. are able to send and receive data via the internet. An alarm clock would communicate with a coffee pot, filters would communicate with your refrigerator (or even the company that sells you the filters), and office equipment could be reordered without having to lift a finger.
Some companies have already developed products fueled by the Internet that are being sold on the market. As an example Nest is a thermostat, carbon monoxide detector, smoke detector and soon a home security system that can be controlled by your phone, tablet or computer.
This is very convenient and saves time and money. However, adding internet connectivity to all of these appliances and gadgets does open us up to additional security threats. While we already have to worry about our phones being hacked, phishing scams, and viruses we now have additional security concerns. A few years ago a hacker was able to hack into a baby monitor. The more “online” we become the more vulnerable we become to hackers intruding into our daily lives, beyond the computer and phone threats we’re somewhat accustomed to.
